What's the difference between Niagara City Cruises and the Maid of the Mist?

Same waterfall, opposite riverbanks: where the two boats really part ways

Both boats sail the same stretch of the lower Niagara River and push into the spray at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, so the ride itself is nearly identical: a roughly 20-minute voyage, and you get soaked on either deck. The real difference is which country you board in. The Maid of the Mist launches from Prospect Point in Niagara Falls, New York, and hands out blue ponchos, while Niagara City Cruises sails from Hornblower Landing on the Ontario side in red ones.

For anyone driving from Toronto, that border line reshapes the whole day: reaching the Maid of the Mist means clearing US customs with a passport, then clearing Canadian customs again on the way home. The Canadian-side boat skips all of it — no crossing, no passport, no queue at the bridge — which is why our chauffeur service stays entirely on the Ontario side and never enters the US. Admission there runs about CA$48 plus HST per adult in season (late April to November, weather permitting), paid at the gate, since we are transport-only and never sell tickets.

From downtown Toronto the run is roughly 128 km, about 90 minutes each way before traffic, and we bill one flat rate per vehicle, 13% HST included, never per person and never a deposit. Your chauffeur drops you at the landing and waits while you sail and dry off. The same car is still parked nearby for the free nightly falls illumination or the seasonal fireworks around 10 PM on summer evenings and special dates.
